When the Game Pauses….

For many of us, our sport is more than just a game—it is a major part of our identity. So when an injury happens, it does not just affect the body; it impacts our mind, emotions, and overall sense of self. Being sidelined can feel like everything has suddenly come to a stop.

Injuries are often unexpected and frustrating. I can still remember one moment I was training, competing, and practicing, and the next possession in practice, it was over, I could not walk. This sudden shift lead to feelings of anger, sadness, and confusion. How could it happen that fast?

However, injuries can also become a turning point. While the physical aspect of recovery is critical, the mental side is just as important. Athletes who approach recovery with patience and a positive mindset often come back stronger—not just physically, but mentally. This period can be an opportunity to build resilience, discipline, and a deeper understanding of the game or art you are trying to perfect.

Stress, pressure, and emotional responses can influence both the likelihood of injury and the recovery process. Learning to manage stress through techniques like goal setting, visualization, and relaxation can improve both healing and overall well-being.

Setting small, realistic goals during recovery is essential. I still remember my first goal after my knee surgery-to pick my leg straight up barely off the ground. It seems like a small goal right? But in the moment of an injury, all goals are important. Focusing only on returning to competition, can make us miss celebrating those small goals—whether it’s regaining range of motion, completing a rehab session, or simply picking your leg straight up in the air slightly off the rehab table. These small wins help rebuild confidence and motivation.

Perhaps the most important lesson injury teaches is perspective. It reminds us to appreciate our sport, our health, and the opportunity to compete. Being able to return to your sport or performance with a new sense of purpose and gratitude is one of my most rewarding outcomes of an injury—and yes, there are rewarding parts of an injury.

Remember, with the right mindset you can come back stronger—both physically and mentally—ready to compete again and embrace the sport you love. Injuries may pause the game, but it does not end the journey.

See you in the next one!
