Do I Have Bad Luck?

Injuries are not just about luck.

Injuries suck. As an athlete, a performer, injuries can feel like the world just ended. We tend to think injuries are always just about bad luck or just because of physical contact yet, they can also be connected to stress.

When we experience high levels of stress—whether from school, competition, or personal life—our bodies respond. Have you ever stayed up late because you are worried about something? Or ate something not the best for you because you were upset? I have definitely done both of those actions! In turn, staying up late means less sleep, eating poorly means lack of energy, which can lead to muscle tension, reduced focus, and slower reaction times. In a game or practice, even a small slip in attention or tight muscles can increase the chance of injury.

Going off of that, coping skills and support systems matter. Athletes who can manage stress well and have stronger support from coaches, teammates, or family are less likely to be affected. On the other hand, those who feel overwhelmed or unsupported may be at greater risk.

The key takeaway is that injury prevention is not just physical—it is mental too. Learning how to manage stress, stay focused, and stay relaxed under pressure can help keep us safer and performing at our best.

Taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body.

See you in the next one!
