What Do I Do Now?
Let’s Navigate the Transition Together
At what point in your career, did you ever ask yourself, “what am I going to do after sports?” Personally, I never did, until it was the only option I had left. For many of us athletes and performers, sports are more than just a game—they are part of who we are. So when that chapter ends, it can feel uncertain and even overwhelming.
Transitioning out of athletics is not just one single moment—it is a process. How well someone adapts depends on factors like their identity, coping skills, and support system. Athletes who strongly identify only as “an athlete” tend to struggle more, while those who have explored other interests often adjust more smoothly. It is important to think about, what are some factors of my life that do not revolve around sports? Bringing attention to the aspects of your life that do not revolve around sports, will make us feel like life does have more to offer!
Support also plays a huge role. Encouragement from family, friends, and mentors can make the transition easier, while a lack of direction can make it more difficult. Developing new goals, routines, and passions helps create a sense of purpose beyond the game. Your friends, family, mentors know you better than most, therefore, they could possibly suggest something about yourself, you may overlook, yet it could definitely help you in your transition! I know mine did when I was transitioning out of sports!
The most important takeaway to remember is that your identity is bigger than your sport. You had a life before you started playing sports or performing! Athletics may shape you, but it does not define your entire future.
Life after sports is not only the end of something—it is the beginning of something new!
See you next time!
